Had this conversation with Latin friends recently, they consider themself as Latino first, loosely Hispanic 2nd.

people from spain and portugal are not latinos, they are white. latinos are from south america and they are "off white" ( whatever that means). the newcomers mixed with the natives and that is why they have a specific look.
