Molly Malones

I just heard that the Irish Exchange Bar in Bangkok (which is owned by the owners of Molly Malones and Scruffy Murphys in Patong) is closed whilt it is being refirbed.

The staff are down on Phuket at Molly Malones being trained and will then return to Bangkok when it will re-open as Molly Malones.


Seems like big plans, hope it works out for them.

Yeah me too. I like Molly Malone's.

I had a great time in the month before the Tsunami. Stayed in the hotel with the entrance right of Molly Malone's (Baan Lamai??) and enjoyed an Irish boy and girl playing guitar and violin and they were supported by two Thais playing bass guitar and drums. They played laods of Irish songs and was great fun. Spent quite a few evenings with my then Chinese GF.

I went back last November and noticed that changed the interior completely. Guess they were hard hit by the Tsunami. Atmosphere was still nice, but the band wasn't as much fun as the one described above.

Went to both Molly's and Scruffy's on my last trip and although they are very similar "typical Irish theme" bars , I preferred Scruffy's for the music and atmosphere.

Molly's had a Filipino band , very "Americanized" , lots of 'big ballads' and 'popular' movie theme songs. Too loud for the size of the place but musically pretty good.

Scruffy's band played more 'chart' and 'favorites' , also occasionally playing a 'jig' on the fiddle. Got the crowd a lot more involved and there was generally a more party/local feel to the night.

Checked out the new Irish bar , "The Irish Times" , in Jungceylon. Looked pretty good inside and apparently the food is excellent (big portions and good quality) , but there never seemed to be many (any !!!) customers. Perhaps when high season arrives , and more people know where it is , it will get busier . Don't know if they plan any 'live' music or if it will lose out on customers due to being next to "Absolute Ceylon".

The one thing I remember about Molly Malone's is the ridiculously large portions that I was served. Nice atmosphere, though - although, one of the only places I had problems in translation with the waitress. Not to worry, though - I'm sure the Irish Exchange Bar refurbishment will work out well.

I still remember Molly Malones 100 Baht Pints of Chang, not that i drink Chang anyway. I drink Tiger Pints when i am in there, i think 150 Baht.

The food is alright if you ask me, but portion is big.

Will check out the one at Jungceylon next trip.

Same same everywhere, everybody seems to go an Irish bar whatever country your in but all they do is hit you in the pocket, Nice to have a pint of guiness tho but not as good as in Ireland.

sound like the band playing at the Huntsman pub at the landmark pub last june, very good

really molly malones when I went last june, good food, had this irish band with a blonde girl playing violin (I think) very good and had a special offer on drinks

Dont seem to see many Asians in Molly Malones. Once i was there, looked around and am the only Chinese guy sitting at the bar.

Never been to Molly's, however, Americanized strikes me as funny (not in a laughable way).
Apparently 12% of all Americans (34+ million) claim Irish ancestry.
That means there are 8 times as many "Irish" in America than Ireland.

This is not a slant, dig or compliment ... just an observation

I go to Irish pubs once a year....on St Pats Day (should be St Patts Day IMHO......now that's a place worth drinking to!!!!).....the rest of the year I stay clear of bulls!te Irish pubs around the world....unless I happen to be in Ireland that is!

The Irish pubs in KL are freaking expensive, i dont go there unless they have promotions and events like BBQ or during EPL games.

In june my TGF took me to every ally street vender not a prob

You cannot review the bands at Molly's or Scruffy's only as a personal opinion of the one playing this week, because they change all the time.

I go into them when I hear that they have a good band in, food is always good standard and large portions, beer on special is cheap.

They offer a break for part of the evening from the beer bars.

Good entertainment, good food, cheap beer and good aircon, only thing missing for a perfect evening is plenty of women, but there again as I said, I only go in for part of the evening!!
