Essential Oils in Eyes

Hi,

I'm asking around for guidance and advice re essential oils splashes in the eye. A colleague of mine recently had tea tree splashed into his eyes and he went to hospital and they washed it out with lots of saline water.

I can remember reading about using carrier oil to remove oil - is this now not advised.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Personally, I have always used pure vegetable oils, and these have had almost immediate effect. I have seen in some aromatherapy books to rinse with water, though I highly suggest that water will only drive the essential oil deeper, and cause more irritation.

milk is another option - the fat in the milk does the same job as oil, and it's runny like water, so is easier to splash in, and you avoid the "I'm putting oil in my eye!" response.

If one is going down the route of putting a drop of carrier oil in the eye to absorb the essential oil make sure it is a good, therapeuticquality carrier oil and not one bought from the supermarket for cooking.

Using carrier oil was an interesting idea, but in reality, what you are doing is putting more stuff into the already irritated eye, but worse, dissolving the essential oil into the carrier oil, which spreads the oil even further around the eye. Not recommended at all.

Using milk is an old option - which again only works if you have enough milk to flush out the oil. Again, the milk dilutes the oil down, but if you are flusing out the eye with the milk anyway, it helps it out. But you are introducing more stuff into an irritated eye.

The reason why many hospitals etc use water to flush the eye out is very simple: oil and water do not mix, and as oil floats on water, flushing the eye out with saline will remove the essential oil. Trust the hospitals on this one!

Interesting finds there, thank you, will try and keep them in mind if I run across a scary situation.
