City Lit - ITEC Sports Massage Diploma

Greetings all

Has anyone done the ITEC Sports Massage Diploma at the City Lit?

Am considering starting this course in the autumn and would appreciate any views on the course and/or the establishment.

Hi Duke,

I have not done the course, but from people I know that enrolled in september, I would not.

I was on a Thai massages course with some people that enroled at citylit and they absolutly hated it. The tutor that was ment to teach the course had left and the new teacher was poor.

I was studying Sport massage at a different college, and found that some of early fundermental things I had learn't had yet to be taught. I believe that some of the students were going to complain about the quality of teaching on the the course that started in september.

Again, I am only passing on here say, butthe people I talked to were fully qualified practioners that resented lossing the time and monet for a poor course.

Please bare this in mind and investigate the quality of teaching fully.

Ok, well here I offer a different opinion. I did my ITEC Holistic at City Lit, as well as a number of taster courses and an advanced massage course.

My tutors have been excellent, the facilities cozy and the information flow brilliant.

City and Islington was (because of timings) my choice for Indian Head Massage and Manual Lymphatic Drainage - and it was DREADFUL, the tutors were good (especially Micha for Indian Head), but the administration, room provision, exam organisation etc were absolutely appalling and really tainted the courses.

For the administration side of things - City Lit is fab, on the teaching side I have had very positive experiences but of course this is just luck. Names to look out for at either college are Carlyn O'Shea, Micha Christmaan, Chaika (holt?).

Hope that helps - if you find the tutors name out let me know - I have knowledge of a lot of them!

You probably have been looking at other threads - it has been suggested that for career progression it would be better going somewhere else other than down the ITEC route - apparantly not as recognised in the sport therapy field.......

You must look at why you want to do sports massage. The ITEC sports massage course is not "Sports Therapy" and in no way can you portray yourself as a Sports therapist, however the ITEC course does have its place. If you want to learn more advanced techniques and want to remain a massage therapist and not a dedicated sports therapist there is no reason why you shouldn't consider this route. If you really want to be a sports therapist, sport must be something you have always been serious about, you must have a wide spectrum of sporting knowledge and experience.

I can't comment on the particular college, but I must admit I have been disappointed with my ITEC Sports Massage course. The syllabus is detailed enough, but the teaching is pretty poor on the exercise theory side, a lot of it you are expected to know already.

just want to add similar reply to most of the others. If you want to get into either sports massage or sports therapy, then dont go down the ITEC or IIST, IIHHT, VTCT route, as these are not well received in the industry.

The main ones, although more expensive, will give you a foot in the door, and lead to a good career.

Hi Sportstherapy,

I'm interested in why you just recommend these three colleges?

I'm hoping to enrol on the Sports and Remedial Massage Course with Scottish Massage Schools this year as it is geographically much closer to me and was recommended by my VTCT Swedish Massage tutor.

I addition there is the Sports Performance Services Sports Massage Diploma course which runs (pardon the pun) around the country.

I'm an ex-competitive Masters Swimmer (car accident last year put paid to that)and the family all play sport to a reasonable level. I'm interested in the Massage element and less in the personal training/nutritional side.

I'd be interested in your comments on these courses. It must be noted though that these are Massage Courses and do not included nutrition etc.

Seriously though
If you are hoping to make a career then think of your potential market.
95% of the population are not 'sports'. The remaining 5% is still riddled with 'politics' (you only have to experience the 'standard' which exists in may 'top class' teams esp FA).
It's possible (I've been lucky, I've worked witha few) but now the Government plans on differentiating between someone who works with sports people (ex. SPIRTO) and 'Joe Public' then careful consideration is required (IMHO of course)
Also, as Richard has rightly said Sports Massage and Sports Therapy are two different things and this will be highlighted when licensing (eventually) comes out. (It was a 5yr plan started in 1997 [8D]
